Technology overview: The function of the skin barrier includes preventing moisture in body from flowing outside as well as blocking harmful, external stimulants, or allergen penetrating to the body. Among various external applications used on skin for treatment of skin diseases, steroid medicine is the most commonly used drug for treating inflammatory response; however, with long- term use, it can cause side effects such as atrophoderma, damage in skin barrier, and more.

Neopharm Co., Ltd. has developed ceramide analog, an essential material in skin barrier function, and also developed in technology of Multi-Lamellar Emulsion:MLE utilizing the analog. In addition, various clinical trials have proved that MLE technology accelerates restoration of function of damaged skin barrier, and strengthens the barrier function. The MLE technology was applied to external application drugs such as steroids, thereby decreasing side effects that may relate to the use of external application on skin, and as a result, leading to development of drug that optimizes transdermal delivery of the drug.

Industrialization: Various external applications on skin applied with MLE have been developed, and the registration as OTC with more than 10 types in the U.S. FDA was completed.

Problem-solving in industrialization: For developing external application on skin through utilization of MLE, it has taken a lot of time and cost for evaluation of compatibility with various drugs. In addition, the establishment of analysis methods for analyzing trace amounts of drugs should be performed prior to conduction of research for delivery behavior of topical medication. In

order to solve these obstacles, formulation library that can be applied based on physical and chemical properties of drugs was established, and evaluation process for compatibility could be reduced. Analysis method for drugs could be obtained in collaborated research with analytical chemistry department at College of Pharmacy, Chungbuk University. Through the collaborated research, it has been confirmed that MLE has an effect optimizing transdermal delivery of drugs.
