Korea’s best leader of high-tech chemical fiber textile
In 2000, both SK Chemicals and Samyang Corporation merged to create Huvis Corp., the biggest textile company in Korea, by combining cutting-edge technological prowess and know-how, and the world’s top manufacturing capabilities. Huvis, boasting the largest production of both chemical fiber and differentiated products in Korea is producing cutting-edge textile materials, such as super fiber, eco-friendly fiber, and differentiated textiles, by operating production factories in Jeonju, Ulsan and China, and the R&D Center in Daejeon. Huvis has obtained certifications of world-leading products, including low melting fiber, latent-crimp stretch composite yarn, dyeable polypropylene fabric, eco-friendly recycle fabric, polyphenylene sulfide fabric, biodegradable fiber, etc., and also eco-friendly certifications of E-mark, Global Recycle Standard, and contribution of resource recycling.
After starting research on super fiber in 2005, at present, Huvis is now engaged in the commercial production of meta-aramid fiber and para-aramid fiber, which are aramid products, uniquely in Korea. It is also commercially producing the melt-spinning polyphenylene sulfide fabric that boasts the world’s second-best quality.
Huvis Water, incorporated into Huvis as its subsidiary in November 2014, is the leading enterprise in the water treatment for power plant in Korea, possessing the core technologies related to water treatment, such as service water and waste water treatment, and sea water desalination. Based on its technological prowess of world-class level and Huvis’ manufacturing technique and the business network, Huvis Water is expected to grow as a top-10 global enterprise specialized in water-treatment in 2025. On the basis of its management philosophy that the advanced materials technology is the foundation for enhancing the quality of human life, Huvis is doing its utmost to develop higher value-added materials.
Advancing to become a leader in the industrial fabric
Huvis possesses many world-class brands in the global industrial fabric market, maintaining first place (market share: 40%) in the low melting fiber market, which is the industrial fabric, together with the conjugate yarn. Unlike general polyester, the low melting fiber is a fiber for adhesion, which melts at 100~200°C, and is widely used in the industrial market, such as construction and automobiles. At present, Huvis is equipped with the low melting fiber production system of more than 300,000 metric tons per annum, and now the low melting fiber has become the foothold for entering the higher value-added differentiated market, such as the markets for super fiber and eco-friendly fiber.
Striving to become a specialized company of super fiber
As interest in safety measures increases following increased danger in the working environment, along with environmental issues, various statutes and regulations are being enacted, and demand for industrial protective clothing is growing explosively.
In order to prepare strategically in advance and respond actively to this industrial flow, Huvis has set up a business unit exclusively for the super fiber and established the fabric factory for producing polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) utilizing the melt spinning method of the existing production system, and metaand para-aramid fiber introducing a new production system.
At present, the global market volume of the protective clothing is more than 10,000 metric tons, increasing by 6% on annual average since the beginning of the business. Huvis, led by the low melting fiber which has been maintaining its high growth by more than 8% on annual average, is diversely producing the super fibers which do not melt and are stronger than iron. About 2,000 metric tons of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fabric, having the most excellent heat-resisting property among the melting polymers, is produced annually at the Ulsan factory, and most of it is exported.
Successful R&D performance connected to notable sales
Huvis has reaped success through its recent R&D efforts. In this regard, R&D Team Ieader Min-sung, Lee explained, “A major success is that we could secure the fundamental technology by acquiring a meta-aramid production facility and, in the process, registered 10 core patents and could apply for 20 relevant patents.” With respect to industrialization of the R&D product, he said, “Based on the know-how ranging from polymerization using new materials to yarn production techniques, we are continuously expanding our business area. From 2015, we started earnestly to develop meta-aramid paper, and at present, we are promoting the extension of usage to the insulation paper market.”
Huvis has increased the developed meta-aramid production facility into a yearly output scale of 1,000 tons, and at present, sells about 1,000 tons of 1.0~5.0De’ class product having stable properties in both domestic and overseas markets. As for the recent sales fi gures and the future targeting plans for both domestic and overseas markets, he said, “The sales fi gures from years 2010 to 2015 were about KRW32 billion, and we are considering building additional factories producing 5,000 tons per annum. Through this, we plan not only to strengthen our position in the overseas markets but also to replace the whole quantity of imported meta-aramid fi ber.”
Expected to grow steadily as the representative fi rm in
Korea taking care of safety issues
Lee said, “Even after completion of the R&D project, Huvis will work harder than ever for developing products boasting of the best quality and service in the overseas market, as well as the domestic market, through continuous research and development for developing new materials as well as the super fabric.”
He added, “We not only have the production technology of meta- and para-aramid fi ber uniquely in Korea, but also possess the production technology of heat-resistance textile products, like PPS. It is our goal to both secure the technological competence as a producer of high-tech materials utilizing various products and attain the quantitative expansion through the building of additional facilities at the same time.”
Though many studies have been done on the super fi ber until now in Korea, in fact, statutes and regulations on the safety protection in Korea are insuffi cient and awareness in each business area has yet to be established. In this respect, Lee explained, “While emphasizing safety as a high priority directly connected to human life, socially we will strive for prestigious quality of high-tech protective meta-aramid fi ber. In addition, economically we will pursue both the development of more specialized new materials and training of professional human resources simultaneously through overall vitalization of the domestic industry by replacing the total volume of imports.”
