CJ Olive Young, Korea’s largest offline cosmetics retailer, is accelerating its overseas market expansion by opening four more stores in the United States this year, an increase from its initial plan.
Olive Young is strongly considering opening a fourth store in California, like its first to third planned locations, a region familiar with K-beauty. As of last month, there were 1,394 offline Olive Young stores in Korea alone, with no overseas locations.
The first store is scheduled to open in May in the former Foot Locker sports shoes and apparel retailer, located between West Colorado Boulevard and South De Lacy Avenue in Pasadena, California. The Foot Locker is currently closed, but the Apple store next door attracts a large number of visitors, including both locals and international tourists.
Almost at the same time as the opening of its first U.S. store, Olive Young plans to open a second store in Westfield Century City, a major shopping mall in Los Angeles. This area is a commercial hub where there are a lot of clothing, accessory, and toy stores, as well as restaurants like Blue Bottle Coffee and McDonald’s. The third store will open in September next year at the Del Amo Shopping Center in Torrance, California.
CJ Olive Young explained its decision to prioritize the USA as a forward base for its overseas expansion, saying, “The United States is the world’s largest cosmetics market and an intensely contested market where global retailers like Sephora and Ulta Beauty already have a strong presence.”
