Lotte’s ice cream sales rise in the first half of the year
Lotte’s Dweji-bar gains popularity in India.
Binggrae’s Melona exports are also rising.
Domestic ice cream manufacturers are increasing overseas sales by leveraging the popularity of K-food and expanding their distribution networks. In particular, Binggrae is targeting North and Latin American markets, while Lotte Wellfood is focusing on the Indian market with its Korean-style ice cream products.
According to the Korea Customs Service, exports of ice cream products reached USD 85.36 million (approximately KRW 118 billion) between January and July, marking a 3.8% increase year-on-year. As domestic ice cream companies increase local production, total overseas sales, including exports, appear to be growing at an even faster rate.
Lotte Wellfood is expanding its overseas ice cream sales, particularly in India, where it maintains local production facilities. In the first half of this year, the company’s Indian subsidiary recorded ice cream sales of KRW 152.1 billion, a 24% increase compared to the same period last year. The stable operation of its new factory in Pune contributed to this growth.
According to Lotte Wellfood, its most successful product in India is Dweji-bar, launched in March of last year. It is sold locally under the name Krunch Bar. Despite being priced three times higher than local ice cream products, its sales in the second quarter of this year surged by over 80% compared to the previous year.
Binggrae has also been boosting ice cream sales recently in regions such as the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Sales by the company’s U.S. subsidiary in the first half of the year totaled KRW 81.1 billion, an increase of approximately 30% year-on-year. Annual sales last year also reached KRW 97 billion, a 21% increase compared to the previous year.
Binggrae sells about 20 brand products, including Melona, fish-shaped Samanco, and Pongtta at Walmart, Costco, and other stores.
Recently, the company has been expanding its sales channels into Canada, and Central & South America. In Canada, it is boosting sales by entering major local retail chains, particularly in the Vancouver and Toronto areas. Sales in Canada for the first half of this year rose by 35% compared to the same period last year.
