Hongju, one of Korea’s traditional alcohol drinks takes on a bright red color which is naturally derived from the Jicho roots, and which is unique among distilled products.
The red-colored traditional liquor is exclusively produced on Jindo Island, in South Jeolla province, just off the southwest corner of the Korean peninsula. The Jindo Hongju has a long history, dating back over 1,000 years.
During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the liquor was served as one of the most prized gifts to Joseon Dynasty kings. The liquor’s traditional manufacturing method has been steadily upgraded with modern technology and facilities.
The Jindo Hongju is now poised to become an international folk liquor. The Daedaero Farm Association Corporation, situated on Jindo, rediscovered the secret distillation method of Jindo Hongju after years of R&D endeavors and obtained a manufacturing license in 1993.
Currently, the company produces Jindo Hongju in its own factory equipped with fully automated and modernized facilities. In 2004, Jindo Hongju was finally designated as a souvenir liquor of Cheongwadae (the Korean Executive Presidential Residence).
Well-matured, the traditional liquor is characterized by a natural red color, soft taste, and unique fragrance. The alcohol content of Hongju brewed with crude liquor fermented is 40%.
After Jindo Hongju is fermented and distilled, violet-root Cromwell is extracted. The flavor and taste of rice and yeast are reproduced to the maximum.
With the unique taste and flavor of violet-root Cromwell, this liquor is most attractive to people. Jindo Hongju is the only distilled liquor in red color in the world.
It does not use artificial colors. Its after taste is clean, leaving no hangover effects. The Violet-root Cromwell was called one of the three major medicines in the past.
Dongeuibogam, an ancient Korean medicine text noted that the plant is good for treating stomach ache, enteritis and fever. Some people
believe that the efficacy of the longaged Violet-root Cromwell is equivalent to sansam (wild ginseng).
The main ingredients of violet-root Cromwell are shikonin and fructooligosaccharide. Shikonin is anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antioxidant substances.
Fructooligosaccharide, an antioxidant, prevents cavity, obesity, and diabetes, improves immunity, decrease cholesterol and stimulates the absorption of calcium.
The Daedaero has long conducted research, analysis and experiments, in consultation with prominent liquor experts and professors and specializes in food engineering.
As a result of such endeavors, the corporation has succeeded in preserving the taste and the fragrance of the traditional Hongju liquor and refined it further to produce quality liquor for contemporary people.
Also, all operations of manufacturing facilities in the Daedaero Farm Association Corporation factory are 100% automated. The corporation is confident that the red liquor can favorably compete in the world market.
