In 2025, Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are proving their strength on the global stage. Exports in the first half of the year reached 56.7 billion US dollars, up 3 percent from 2024. Even more telling, the number of exporting SMEs rose to 78,655, a record high. This expansion shows that more Korean companies are entering international markets, not just a handful of standout firms.
At home, however, conditions remain subdued. SME manufacturing and services grew by only 0.8 percent, while retail sales increased by just 1.1 percent. This contrast highlights a dual structure: globally competitive SMEs are thriving abroad, while domestically focused firms still face weak demand. The clear takeaway is that global engagement is becoming the lifeline for SME growth.

The strength of Korean SMEs lies in the excellence and adaptability of their products. Cosmetics exports rose 19.7 percent to 3.94 billion US dollars in the first half of 2025. Beyond traditional markets like the US and China, demand surged in the United Arab Emirates (+63.6 percent) and Poland (+160.5 percent). This geographic diversification underscores K-beauty’s resonance worldwide.
Automobile exports tell a similar story of agility. SME-led car exports jumped 73.7 percent to 3.92 billion US dollars, driven largely by used vehicles. The UAE has become a hub for this trade, with rental and tourism demand fueling growth. By moving swiftly into this niche, Korean SMEs displayed the flexibility that distinguishes them from larger firms. Machinery exports, by contrast, fell 31.2 percent amid slower demand for electric vehicles, showing how SMEs excel most when aligned with consumer-driven markets.

Innovation as the path to global competitiveness
Technology adoption is now a defining factor for SME success. Companies that integrate artificial intelligence into production and quality control are seeing measurable gains. One SME reported a 25 percent increase in delivery volumes after introducing AI, demonstrating that digital transformation is directly tied to growth rather than being limited to efficiency.
AI enables predictive maintenance, defect detection, and smarter supply chain management, giving SMEs the tools to deliver higher quality at lower cost. By pairing traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, Korean SMEs are forging a unique identity — fast, precise, and globally competitive.
For long-term success, however, building sustainable capabilities is crucial. Past efforts to cultivate “hidden champions” often faltered because firms focused too heavily on short-term sales. In contrast, Germany’s hidden champions thrive over decades by embedding innovation and strong management into their core. Korea’s next step must be to nurture “Hidden Champions 2.0,” SMEs that combine technology, branding, and sustainable growth models to secure lasting global leadership.

Expanding global reach through policy and collaboration
Government support is amplifying SME potential. In 2025, Korea is establishing integrated support hubs in Silicon Valley to connect SMEs with local investors, incubators, and global supply chains. For the first time, 60 billion KRW in policy financing is being directed to overseas subsidiaries, enabling local production and R&D.
Strategic industries are also being prioritized. K-beauty is backed by a dedicated fund, specialized R&D programs, and international certification assistance. Tech services are supported through new export vouchers and expanded exhibition participation. At the same time, fashion, jewelry, and lifestyle goods are being developed as new “K-Hallyu” categories, riding the wave of Korean cultural exports.
International leadership is another pillar of expansion. Hosting the APEC SME Ministers Meeting in Jeju in September 2025 offers Korea a platform to showcase SME innovation while shaping regional agendas. Bilateral partnerships with ASEAN countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia are creating new cooperative channels for SME growth.
Looking forward, three strategies are essential: accelerating digital transformation across SMEs, building Hidden Champions 2.0 with true core competencies, and institutionalizing risk management to navigate global trade uncertainties. By pursuing these priorities, Korean SMEs can secure a stronger global presence while reinforcing the national economy.

Small Enterprises, Global Impact
Korean SMEs are no longer just domestic players. With superior products, agile strategies, and expanding international support, they are evolving into global game changers. Their ability to adapt to shifting demand, embrace technology, and tap into cultural influence ensures that they will shape the future of international business.
If current momentum continues, Korean SMEs will not only enhance Korea’s economic resilience but also redefine the role of small and medium-sized enterprises worldwide. Their story is one of resilience, ambition, and global leadership in the making.
