Korea’s SMEs Rising as Global Powerhouses
In 2025, Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are proving their strength on the global stage. Exports in the first half of the year reached 56.7 billion US dollars, up 3 percent from 2024. Even more telling, the number of exporting SMEs rose to 78,655, a record high. This expansion shows that more Korean companies are entering international markets, not just a handful of standout firms.
At home, however, the business climate remains sluggish. Recent data show that total SME sales reached 3,301.3 trillion won — a slight 0.2 percent decline from the previous year. This widening gap between export-driven and domestically focused SMEs reinforces the structural divide: firms with global reach continue to advance, while those tied to local demand face ongoing stagnation.

The strength of Korean SMEs lies in the excellence and adaptability of their products. Cosmetics exports rose 19.7 percent to 3.94 billion US dollars in the first half of 2025. Instead of relying solely on established markets such as the U.S. and China, Korean beauty brands are expanding rapidly into Europe, the Middle East, and emerging regions, demonstrating the increasingly global appeal of K-beauty.
Consumer products — including beauty, lifestyle goods, health foods, and daily-use specialties — continue to drive export momentum. These categories align naturally with shifting global preferences toward wellness, personal expression, and functional convenience. Korean SMEs have excelled in this area by combining quality manufacturing with trend-setting innovation, enabling them to carve out competitive positions in crowded global markets.

Innovation as the path to global competitiveness
Digital transformation is now emerging as one of the most decisive factors for SME growth. Companies are increasingly adopting AI, data-driven production tools, and streamlined online export channels to remain competitive in the face of global market volatility. Rather than isolated success stories, these shifts reflect a broad industry trend: SMEs that modernize and adapt quickly are achieving stronger export results and greater operational resilience.
AI enables predictive maintenance, defect detection, and smarter supply chain management, giving SMEs the tools to deliver higher quality at lower cost. By pairing traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, Korean SMEs are forging a unique identity — fast, precise, and globally competitive.
For long-term success, however, building sustainable capabilities is crucial. Past efforts to foster “hidden champions” often faltered due to short-term sales orientation. Going forward, SMEs must balance innovation with branding, management sophistication, and long-term stability — the essential pillars of a new generation of “Hidden Champions 2.0.” Korea’s next step must be to nurture SMEs that combine technology, branding, and sustainable growth models to secure lasting global leadership.

Expanding global reach through policy and collaboration
Government support measures in 2025 are increasingly targeted toward strengthening export competitiveness. New initiatives include expanded export vouchers, simplified logistics and financing programs, and support packages designed to help SMEs respond quickly to shifting trade conditions.
Under the K-Export Strategy Items program, the government has designated around 80 high-potential export products across sectors such as beauty, lifestyle, processed foods, and home living, with plans to continue expanding categories annually through 2030.
At the same time, SMEs are accelerating their shift toward online exports. As of late 2025, cross-border e-commerce transactions by SMEs are approaching record levels, driven by direct-to-consumer channels and global marketplace expansion. This transition is particularly beneficial for smaller firms, enabling overseas entry without the traditional barriers of distributors, retail networks, or large-scale marketing budgets.

Looking forward, three strategies are essential: accelerating digital transformation across SMEs, building Hidden Champions 2.0 with true core competencies, and institutionalizing risk management to navigate global trade uncertainties. By pursuing these priorities, Korean SMEs can secure a stronger global presence while reinforcing the national economy.

Small Enterprises, Global Impact
Korean SMEs are no longer just domestic players. With superior products, agile strategies, and expanding international support, they are evolving into global game changers. Their ability to adapt to shifting demand, embrace technology, and leverage cultural influence ensures that they will shape the future of international business.
If current momentum continues, Korean SMEs will not only enhance Korea’s economic resilience but also redefine the role of small and medium-sized enterprises worldwide. Their story is one of resilience, ambition, and global leadership in the making.
