K-Department Stores to Open Flagship Stores in Japan
Hyundai Department Store to open in Tokyo’s Omotesando
Shinsegae to double its number of overseas pop-ups
Lotte also plans to open pop-ups in Japan and Vietnam
With the K-culture boom, K-department stores are accelerating their expansion into overseas markets including Japan and Southeast Asia. Hyundai Department Store has decided to open a large flagship store in Tokyo, Japan, the first Korean company to do so. Meanwhile, Korea’s Shinsegae Department Store plans to open twice as many pop-up stores overseas this year compared to last year.

According to Hyundai, the first flagship store of “The Hyundai Global” opened in Omotesando, Tokyo, last month. This is the first time for a Korean department store to run a large-scale regular flagship store in Japan’s key commercial district. This store will open in Tokyu Plaza Omokado, a complex shopping mall, with a size of 620 square meters (approximately 187 pyeong). Following the opening of a small regular store in Parco Shibuya, Tokyo, last year, the company has established a large base with expanded size and content on a luxury shopping street.
This store sells K-fashion, beauty, food, and intellectual property (IP) products.
Shinsegae is expanding its sales channels by significantly increasing its overseas pop-up stores. Shinsegae’s overseas pop-ups, which were limited to just one in 2023 and 2024, respectively, but increased to five last year, and ten are planned to open this year. While pop-ups were mainly held in Tokyo in the first half of this year, approximately six events are scheduled to be held in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States in the second half.
Shinsegae is expanding overseas pop-ups of K-fashion and beauty brands through its overseas expansion platform, Hyperground.
Lotte Department Store is growing its overseas business by directly operating department stores and shopping malls in Vietnam and Indonesia. It is currently operating Lotte Mall Westlake Hanoi, Lotte Department Store Hanoi branch and Ho Chi Minh City branch, and Lotte Mall Jakarta branch. Last year, overseas business revenue reached KRW 126.7 billion, a 9.5% increase from the previous year, and in the first quarter of this year, it also increased by 14.7% compared to the same period last year.
