Eco-friendly baby goods

Eco-friendly baby goods have become a mainstream trend, appealing to Korean consumers pursing health-oriented lifestyle.

South Korea’s low birth rate stood at 1.18 children per women in 2013, which was the lowest among OECD countries. And the number of Korean newborns has dropped from 769,000 in 1983 to 470,000 in 2010. Experts project that the figure will decline to 325,000 by 2040.

Despite the lower birth rate and the recent economic recession, Korea’s baby goods industry has shown double-digit growth. The market for baby goods is estimated at 27 trillion won ($24.4 billion) and grows by 20 percent every year. That’s because Korean parents place higher priority on their kids, as they have comparatively fewer children, compared with previous generations. Furthermore, health-orientedand well-being lifestyle trend among Korean consumes is infl uencing the baby goods industry.

The industry sources say that despite relatively high price, the sales of organic or eco-friendly labeled baby goods have steadily increased. To capitalize on the trend, Korean makers of children items have come up with diverse organic cott on baby items, including baby apparels, bedding, bath towels, diapers, car seats and even strollers. BPA-free plastic supplies such as bott les & tableware, non-toxic &hypoallergenic skincare products and detergents are also holding larger market shares from a niche market, driven in part by health concerns about chemical exposures.
